ASU"s Newman pitches past Wichita State 6-1


<p> Third ranked Arizona State waited out an hour rain delay on Wednesday night in Wichita then beat the #10 Wichita State Shockers 6-1 at Eck Stadium. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/newman_matt00.html">Ma… Newman</a>, making his first career start and only his third career pitching appearance, threw 6.2 magnificent innings, helping the Devils improve to 38-9 on the year.</p><separator></separator><p>Newman allowed only one run on five hits during his 6.2 innings of work, picking up his first collegiate victory in the process. <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/leake_mike00.html">Mike Leake</a> pitched the final 2.1 innings, coming on to pitch after playing stellar defense at short and picked up his first save of the season and second of his career.</p><separator></separator><p>Arizona State got started early, snapping a five game streak that saw the opponent score first. Leake brought home another run in the top of the sixth, doubling home</p><separator></separator><p>The Shockers got to Newman in the sixth, pushing a run across to cut the lead to 3-1. Leake came on to pitch in the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs. After throwing a strike to the hitter, he promptly picked the runner off first to end the threat.</p><separator></separator><p>A <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/paramore_petey00.html"… Paramore</a> sac fly in the eighth scored Kipnis to make it 4-1, then <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/bordes_greg00.html">Gr… Bordes</a> added some insurance in the ninth, singling to center to score pinch runner <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/elmore_jake00.html">Ja… Elmore</a> from second to make it 5-1. With runners at the corners and one out, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/sontag_ryan00.html">Ry… Sontag</a> laid down a perfect bunt to push the lead to 6-1. Leake would slam the door in the ninth to secure the victory.</p><separator></separator><p> Newman was the star, working out of several jams by inducing ground balls and pop ups. He walked two and struck out two in his third appearance of the year.
