ASU's Dumble named National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year

<p>The U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/dumble_david00.html">Da… Dumble</a>, the ninth-year assistant coach for the Arizona State University track &amp; field program, as the 2010 National Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for outdoor track &amp; field in Division I as voted by the nation’s coaches. Dumble, the Sun Devils’ throws coach and recipient of the same honor during this past indoor season, guided senior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/whiting_ryan00.html">Ry… Whiting</a> to NCAA titles in the shot put and discus at this year’s national outdoor championships.</p><separator></separator><p>Whiting, the 2010 USTFCCCA Co-National Field Athlete of the Year, won his second-consecutive and fifth overall NCAA title with the shot during the outdoor season, adding also a national crown with the discus. Pairing the two, Whiting became the eighth man to produce national crowns in both events and the first since SMU’s Janus Robberts in 2002. With the accomplishment, Whiting joins a club that includes the likes of John Godina, John Brenner and Randy Matson.</p><separator></separator><p>Whiting never lost to a collegian during the season in seven competitions and notched throws of over 21.25m (69-08.50) in each of them. In fact, Whiting notched an all-time collegiate best 10 competitions of over 70 feet in his career, five of which came during the 2010 outdoor season. In the NCAA Championships, Whiting had three throws over 71 feet, including his final toss of 21.97m (72-01.00) – a measure that was just three centimeters shy of Godina’s 1995 collegiate record and the second-best all-time in collegiate competition. All told, Whiting tallied the second-, tenth-, and 13th-best all-time best throws in the collegiate ranks in the single NCAA competition.</p><separator></separator><p>Dumble’s ASU throws crew also notched three of the Top 8 spots in the shot put as Whiting’s winning performance was combined with Jordan Clarke’s fifth-place showing and Jason Lewis’ seventh-place finish. Lewis also placed seventh in the discus and earned USTFCCCA All-America honors in the hammer throw. The trio of Whiting, Clarke and Lewis swept the Top 3 spots at the Pac-10 Championships in the shot put.</p><separator></separator><p>Overall, Dumble has collected five total national assistant coach of the year honors with both of his men’s honors coming this year (2010 indoor and 2010 outdoor). Prior to this season, Dumble had been honored as the women’s national assistant coach of the year for the 2006 and 2007 outdoor seasons and the 2008 indoor season.</p><separator></separator><p>Dumble has several of his current and former athletes competing in the 2010 USA Track &amp; Field Championships this week in Des Moines, Iowa, including Whiting, who is ranked third in the shot put, and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/jelmini_anna00.html">An… Jelmini</a>, who redshirted her rookie season this year and is ranked sixth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.</p>
