The ASU Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship encourages a family tradition of attending Arizona State University and celebrates those traditions with scholarships. Through the generous support of donors, the ASU Alumni Association was able to award 61 Legacy Scholarships to 10 seniors, five juniors, 11 sophomores and 35 freshmen for the 2020–21 school year.
The Legacy Scholarship fund was established in 2010 to support family members of ASU graduates. Since then, support for this scholarship fund has grown and the Alumni Association has been able to expand the number of scholarships awarded from three students the first year to 61 students this year. In addition to expanding the number of scholars who benefit, the association also has increased the scholarship amount per student this year from $1,000 to $1,200.
“Generous donations from Sun Devils allows the Alumni Association to award Legacy Scholarships every year,” said Christine K. Wilkinson, president and CEO of the ASU Alumni Association. “This scholarship allows students to carry on their family tradition and pursue their academic career at ASU.”
During the virtual banquet on Thursday, Aug. 27, one student also was awarded the Clare Morris Legacy Scholarship. Morris was one of the first scholars to receive the ASU Legacy Scholarship Award in 2010. Morris was a justice studies major at ASU who was honored on the Dean’s List and planned to attend law school after graduation. Morris was extremely involved on campus and in her community, volunteered with the Student Alumni Association, and provided many hours of service to programs including Invisible Children, Project Connect and Hayman Fire Relief in Colorado.
Upon Morris’s passing, her family established a permanent endowment for the Clare Morris Legacy Scholarship. The Morris family looks forward to selecting and awarding the Clare Morris Legacy Scholarship each year. This year’s 2020 Clare Morris Legacy Scholarship was awarded to Travis Wanless, a senior at ASU studying material science and engineering at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
