ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business ranks top 3 in 4 disciplines in online MBA list

January 14, 2020

For the first time since launching its prestigious Online MBA Programs rankings, U.S. News & World Report has also named the top schools in four key business disciplines, and the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is ranked top 3 in each.

In the peer-reviewed rankings released today, the W. P. Carey School was No. 1 in both general management and marketing, No. 2 in business analytics and No. 3 in finance. W. P. Carey also ranks No. 10 among all online MBA programs — the eighth straight year the program has made the top 10. McCord Hall exterior Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU Now Download Full Image

“We’re very proud to be ranked top 3 across the board in academic disciplines,” said Amy Hillman, dean and Charles J. Robel Dean’s Chair of the W. P. Carey School of Business. “That speaks so highly of our departments and the faculty who bring their expertise and passion to the online courses. We have a long history with online education — first offering our online MBA more than 15 years ago — and it’s always gratifying to see the hard work of so many faculty, staff and students receive national recognition.”

The quality of the school’s online MBA has also been recently acknowledged by the Princeton Review and Financial Times, ranking it No. 10 in the U.S. and No. 9 in the world, respectively.

The new academic specialty rankings are determined exclusively by peer assessment. To be eligible, a school must be ranked among the best online MBA programs overall, and must receive at least five ratings from peer institutions.

“The fact that other business schools think so highly of our academics speaks volumes about the quality of the W. P. Carey online MBA,” Hillman added.

Each year, U.S. News also lists non-MBA programs in its Online Graduate Business Programs ranking. Once again this year, W. P. Carey ranked No. 6 in the nation. Additionally, the school was ranked No. 3 for veterans seeking online graduate business programs and No. 6 for veterans seeking online MBA programs specifically.

With the new academic discipline listings, the W. P. Carey School of Business now ranks top 30 in U.S. News & World Report for 25 distinct undergraduate and graduate programs and fields of study.

ASU teachers college online graduate programs' specialty areas ranked among best in US

January 14, 2020

Five online master’s degrees in education offered by Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College are among the top 10 in the nation in their specialty areas, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2020 Best Online Programs rankings.

These peer-reviewed honors made the college one of only three colleges of education in the country to rank in the U.S News top 20 in both on-campus and online graduate education degrees. Overall, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is tied for the No. 15 ranking for Best Online Master’s Education Programs. The college's rankings in online master’s degree specialty areas — determined by peer assessment— include:

  • No. 1 — curriculum and instruction.
  • No. 1 — educational/instructional media design.
  • No. 2 — educational administration and supervision.
  • No. 3 — special education.
  • No. 4 — online master’s education program for veterans.

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College earned the No. 1 ranking in curriculum and instruction for its online degrees in early childhood education, English as a second language and gifted education. Top honors for educational/instructional media design went to the Master of Education degree in learning design and technologies.

The Master of Education in educational leadership is the No. 2-ranked online administration master’s degree in the country, and degrees in autism spectrum disorders and applied behavior analysis earned the No. 3 ranking in special education.

These top rankings for online degrees, including No. 4 for best master’s education program for veterans, are testaments to the college's commitment to both quality and access, said Dean Carole Basile.

“Our college has a well-established reputation for excellence in our immersion degree programs,” Basile said, “but excellence in education is not excellent if it is exclusive.

“Our online degrees are created and taught by the same exemplary faculty responsible for our highly ranked on-campus degrees, and ASU’s pioneering work in online education allows us to make our faculty and these valuable degrees available to education leaders wherever they are.”

Meredith Toth, assistant dean for digital learning, said, “Online learning at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is as varied as traditional classroom learning. It’s often even more interactive as students regularly engage with the material, with one another and with instructors — individually or in teams — as part of the learning process.”

Toth said one of the keys to making online education successful is how the instructional designers and faculty collaborate to design activities for an online model.

“We can’t simply replicate an in-person activity or lesson,” Toth said. “We must redesign it.”
