ASU art professor participates in three-week international residency in Atacama Desert

Adriene Jenik, professor of intermedia and former director of the School of Art at Arizona State University, was selected to participate in a three-week international artists residency in the Atacama Desert. Jenik will be working on writing a bilingual performance of her climate future readings with her ECOtarot deck.

“With the deck, I ‘channel’ scientific research and modelled projections related to our changing, human-influenced climate through the layered form and symbolic meanings of tarot,” Jenik says on her website. “With this practice, as in much of my previous artwork, I seek to catalyze a deep and broad conversation regarding our shared future.”

Earlier this year, Jenik presented her creative research with an ECOtarot performance and a talk at the UNiArts program in Ecology and Contemporary Performance at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, and a creative workshop at the Radical Relevancies Conference at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. During her stay in Finland, she was hosted at the artists' residency at Villa Elaintarha. In March, she was hosted by the Berkeley Ecology Center and Churchill Orchard offering her climate future readings with her ECOtarot deck at the Berkeley Farmers Market.
