ASU School of Dance presents Emerging Artists II Nov. 5–7

What
Emerging Artists II, held Nov. 5–7, features MFA candidates in dance, Rebecca A. Ferrell’sImpressive Mastermind, Rebecca Blair Hillerby’s B.O.D.I.E.S, and Crystal Bedford’s You made up the Story and I played with all the Parts on a variety of platforms. These performances are intended for mature audiences only and contain nudity.

The night begins inside the School of Dance lobby with Ferrell’s Impressive Mastermind. This piece examines privacy laws surrounding the USA PATRIOT Act, most notably those surrounding airport security within a post 9/11 America. This trans-disciplinary piece moves away from the construction of spectacle and into a multi-dimensional experience for the audience, enabling them to feel, hear, and see the subject matter from a number of perspectives. This live performance incorporates live and recorded video, text, and audio soundtracks.

Hillerby’s B.O.D.I.E.S piece is focused on the use of somatics, or the relationship between the body and mind in the choreographic proccess. The focus of Hillerby’s work is the idea that dance choreography should be about what movement feels like with the understanding that no two dancers have the same bodies, and therefore the dance will look and even feel differently. B.O.D.I.E.S is performed with more than 20 mirrors positioned onstage to emphasize the obsession of external sensory information. The audience joins four dancers on a movement journey of their individual bodies through discovery, exploration, and identity. It’s Hillerby’s hope that the audience connects to each performer’s exploration of inner landscapes and the external environment, set to an original musical composition by Robin Vining, School of Dance accompanist.

You made up the Story and I played with all the Parts, by Bedford, examines bisexuality as the new way to be socially constructed. In a society that Bedford feels continuously is filled with the pressures to be “heteronormative,” her work deconstructs the norm into creating her sexual utopia explored through desire and relationships. The multidisciplinary work incorporates live performance, original text, video, and original music composed by Robin Vining, School of Dance accompanist. Bedford hopes that her work can take the audience onto new journeys of self-discovery and reflection.
