The Northlight Gallery presents Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image

The ASU School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts presents the photographic exhibition, Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image.

What
Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image features the work of members of the Women’s Caucus of the Society for Photographic Education. Images in the exhibition originate in the formidable triumvirate of the theme: science – the logical mind, poetry – the imagination, and photography – the dominant global language and basis of contemporary communication. The individual works present a wide array of subject matter and issues from self-portraiture, the body, family, and social issues, to landscape, religion, and abstraction. Artists find a voice in styles ranging from documentary to digital composites.

Two of photography’s visionaries, Mary Ann Lynch and Dr. Deborah Willis, co-juried the exhibition from over 200 entries. Mary Ann Lynch has been a prolific photographer, author, and filmmaker since the 1970s. The founder of Combinations, a Journal of Photography and Not for Profit Network: Photographers & Social Change, Lynch has spoken at the NYS Writer's Institute, SPE conferences, campuses, art centers and elsewhere. Named among the 100 Most Important People in Photography by American Photography Magazine, Dr. Deborah Willis is chair and professor of photography and imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, where she also has an affiliated appointment with the College of Arts and Sciences, Africana Studies.

Science, Poetry and the Photographic Image was part of the 2011 Conference of the Society for Photographic Education in Atlanta and was first shown at the Trois Gallery at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus.

The Northlight Gallery is located in room 101 in Matthews Hall on the southeast corner of Tyler and Forest Malls on the ASU Tempe campus.
