Julian Bond, chairman emeritus of the NAACP National Board of Directors, presented "Under Color of Law" for the 11th annual John P. Morris Lecture. The lecture was a recounting of his personal experiences with the law and more broadly, the law's role – for better and worse – in the struggle for racial equality, social activist and early leader in the civil rights movement.

Current and past leaders of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law listen to remarks by legendary civil-rights activist Julian Bond at the annual John P. Morris Memorial Lecture on April 14, in the Great Hall. From left are dean Paul Schiff Berman, professor and dean emeritus Alan Matheson and Judge William C. Canby Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Canby, a founding faculty member at the law school, and Matheson were close friends of Morris, a law professor at ASU from 1968 to 1993 who was committed to the principles of justice and equal opportunity. Matheson opened the lecture with stories about Morris and his lifelong dedication to fostering diversity.

Following Pat’s Run on April 16, Sun Devil Stadium hosted the annual Maroon and Gold Spring Football Game.

Students at the Herberger Academy cut the ribbon at a launch event at ASU’s West campus. The school is designed to meet the unique educational needs of gifted middle school students.

Jenny L. Erwin, regional administrator for the Women’s Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor, Region 9 Office, talks with a participant at the National Dialogue on Workplace Flexibility: Challenges and Solutions for Arizona’s Military Families, held April 20 on ASU’s Downtown campus. Erwin opened the conference, which involved employers, employees, advocates, researchers, educators, students and other stakeholders from across Arizona, discussing ways to make the workplace more flexible for service members and military families. It was co-sponsored by the Work-Life Policy Unit in the Civil Justice Clinic at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees delivered the 2011 BEYOND lecture at Murdock Hall on ASU’s Tempe campus, March 14th. The astronomer addressed issues surrounding the long-range future for life, here on Earth and far beyond. Lord Rees, has held the honorary title of Astronomer Royal since 1995 and until recently was president of the Royal Society, Britain’s most prestigious scientific role. Aubrey Binder, a junior art education major, does her homework in the comfortable and quiet surroundings of the Design North building's outdoor terrace.

Rachele Valente, laboratory coordinator, and Stephen Helms Tillery, assistant professor in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, work in the Sensorimotor Research Group laboratory. Helms Tillery’s group analyzes how the brain processes touch and is working to duplicate that process. The research advances the ability to create more life-like prosthetics that respond to brain signals. For more about the research visit smorg.asu.edu.
