Women's tennis opens season at Cal Nike Invitational

The Arizona State women’s tennis team opens up their fall season on the road at the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

The California Golden Bears host players from Arizona State, BYU, Fresno State, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis and USC for the three-day tournament.

Last season, Sun Devil senior Kelcy McKenna claimed the singles championship at the Cal Nike Invitational over California’s Annie Goransson in three sets. Arizona State’s doubles pair of McKenna and fellow senior Micaela Hein also made it to the finals but was topped by the Cal pairing of Andersson and Juricova.

Competing in the tournament for Arizona State will be: junior Hannah James, freshman Joanna Smith, senior Michelle Brycki, junior Nicole Smith and senior Sianna Simmons.

The tournament will feature two 32-woman singles flights (Gold and Blue) and one 16-woman singles flight (White) as well as two 16-team doubles flights (Gold and Blue) and one eight-team doubles flight (White). Play begins at 8 a.m. PT, Sept. 30, with the first round of doubles matches in all flights. Championship matches will take place in the afternoon, Oct. 2.
