Women's swimming, diving places 12th at NCAAs; marks highest finish since 2005
With its best finish in seven years, the Arizona State women’s swimming and diving program took 12th place at the 2012 NCAA Championships with a total of 123 points, Saturday, in Auburn, Ala. This is the best finish for the Sun Devils since the team placed 12th at the NCAA Championships in 2005. At the NCAA Championships, a total of eight athletes earned a total of 20 All-America honors, including six first-team All-Americans and 10 first-team honors.
Swimmers Rebecca Ejdervik, Shannon Landgrebe and Caroline Kuczynski each earned two first-team All-American titles a piece with top-8 finishes in both the 400 medley relay and their respective individual events. Diver Elina Eggers also scored two All-America honors with her sixth-place finish on the 3-meter and eighth-place finish on platform. On Saturday, the Sun Devils got big performances from sophomore Tristin Baxter, Eggers and Landgrebe. Baxter once again set a new school record in the 1650 free with a time of 16:02.60, a full three seconds faster than her previous record set at Pac-12 Championships. Baxter now owns the top-two times in school history, amazingly with a difference of almost 12 seconds between the two.
Senior Elina Eggers finished in eighth place on platform with a score of 266.55 to add another 11 points to the Sun Devils' total. With a time of 48.79, Landgrebe took 15th in the 100 free. But with her prelim time of 48.48, Landgrebe also recorded the second-best time in school history in the event.
