Women's basketball improves to 7-4 with 62-50 victory

The Sun Devil women's basketball team asserted its dominance early and never trailed throughout, capturing a 62-50 victory over Longwood on Dec. 22 to help extend its winning streak to four games and improve to 7-4.

The first half began slowly for both teams, combining to shoot 3-15 from the field to start the game. The Sun Devils pressed hard on defense, though, forcing five turnovers before the first official timeout, helping them jump out to a 5-2 lead.

Shots soon started falling for the Devils, as they saw their lead extend to 21-4 following a 10-0 run.

Longwood fought back and put points on the board, but still trailed the Sun Devils 33-14 at halftime.

ASU shot 37 percent in the first half on 13-35 shooting, while Longwood only shot 19 percent on 5-27 from the floor, missing its final six shots of the half.

Eight different Sun Devils scored in the first half led by Janae Fulcher, who had eight points.

The second half proved to be much like the first, with Arizona State continuing its dominance. With 13:15 to play Micaela Pickens hit a baseline jumper extending the lead to 43-20.

A layup by Promise Amukamara helped the Sun Devils eclipse the 50-point mark with 9:42 to play in the game, bringing the lead to 26..

The Sun Devils finished the game shooting 36 percent while Longwood could only manage 30 percent. Both teams struggled from the perimeter, combining to shoot only 2 for 23.

Fulcher led ASU with 15 points, while Pickens and Amukamara added 11 and 10 points respectively. Joy Burke led the way for Arizona State on the boards with 12 rebounds. 

The Sun Devil women's basketball team won't be in action again until next Sunday, Dec. 30, (2 p.m.) when it hosts Idaho State at Wells Fargo Arena.
