Wheels of the Justice Bus to roll at ABA meeting

Dean Paul Schiff Berman and staff at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law will participate in a panel on Wednesday, May 12, at the Law School Pro Bono Program, presented by the American Bar Association Center for Pro Bono. They will discuss a new program at the law school in which legal services are provided by volunteer lawyers and students to citizens in rural and remote areas of Arizona.

Following the panel, Sarah M. Buel, the incoming faculty director of the College’s new Diane Halle Center for Family Justice, will deliver the keynote address to program participants. The program precedes the 2010 Equal Justice Conference, sponsored by the ABA and the National Legal Aid & Defender Association.

Berman will make the presentation, “Justice Bus Legal Services on the Road!” and will be joined by Kristine Reich, Director of Student Affairs and Public Interest, Marcy Karin, Associate Clinical Professor and Director of the Civil Justice Clinic’s Work-Life Policy Unit, and Mary Juetten, a second-year law student.

Services offered by the Justice Bus include consumer protection, mortgage foreclosure prevention, income tax preparation, unemployment issues, wills and estate planning, and domestic violence prevention. The panelists will discuss steps taken to implement the program and attract donors.
