Water polo falls to Hawaii


The ninth-ranked women's water polo team lost 7-4 to No. 4 Hawai'i in the semifinals of the consolation bracket May 1 at the MPSF Championships in Los Angeles. Senior center Kelly Phelps led the charge for the Sun Devils (16-14, 0-7) with two goals.

The Sun Devils came out firing for the second game in a row as Phelps gave ASU the early 1-0 lead with an exclusion goal at the 5:35 mark in the first quarter. After Hawai'i knotted the match at one goal apiece, sophomore attacker Kelsey White found the back of the net with just over a minute to play in the frame.

Freshman center Shannon Haas scored the only goal of the second quarter and sophomore goalie Dana Harvey collected four saves in the frame as the Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead into halftime.

Following a trio of Hawai'i goals in the third stanza, Phelps added her second goal of the match with 7:25 left in the game to cut the deficit to one. The Rainbow Wahine tacked on two more goals in the final quarter to take the win, 7-4.

Harvey recorded nine saves in four quarters of play.

The Sun Devils will face No. 6 San Jose State in the 7th-place match at 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
