University network service outage

Shortly after 9 p.m., Feb. 5, access to the ASU network and the broader Internet were affected by an apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in which various malware-infected machines began flooding the network with data intended to disrupt the operation of the targeted websites/hosts.

Three of those machines were located inside the ASU network, disrupting access for the ASU community and contributing to the broader access issues on the Internet.  After some effort, the three machines were identified and removed from the network, and the ASU network returned to normal operation at approximately 10:30 p.m.

We apologize for this outage and the resulting impact on students, faculty and staff. Our investigation into this incident is continuing.
