Swimming opens up Arena Invitational with relay victory

On the first day of competition at the 2011 Arena Invitational, the Sun Devils were already earning victories and setting NCAA B standard marks, Thursday, in Long Beach, Calif.

The ASU 400  medley relay of Kelli Kyle, Rebecca Ejdervik, Caroline Kuczynski, and Shannon Landgrebe finished in first place in the event, touching in with an NCAA B standard time of 3:36.13.

Less than a week after setting the new ASU school record in the 1000 free, junior Cassie Morrice once again swam at a record-setting pace. In the women's 500 free, Morrice swam the event in a time of 4:41.31 to earn an NCAA B standard qualifiying time and set a new program record at Arizona State.

Kuczynski also earned an NCAA B standard in the women's 200 IM, as she finished in fifth place with a time of 2:00.05. Senior Penelope Yamauchi finished eighth in the same event, recording a time of 2:02.17.

The ASU 200 free relay of Daniel Jurgs, Herbie Behm, Jesper Akesson and Ryan Dignan finished in fourth place in the event. The relay recorded a time of 1:22.45, just a second off the NCAA B standard time.

In the men's 50 free, Behm finished seventh overall in the event and recording a time of 20.48. Freshman Zac Dalby finished 19th in the men's 200 IM, swimming the event in a time of 1:52.24. In the men's 500 free, sophomore Hayden Thomas swam the distance event in a time of 4:32.77.

The second day of the Arena Invitational continues today from Long Beach, Calif.
