Students find green is the way to go

As colleges and universities set up new majors and minors in green studies, students are filling them up fast, according to an article in USA Today.

Arizona State University’s sustainability education offerings are featured in the article “As colleges add green majors and minors, classes fill up.”

According to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, more than 100 majors, minors or certificates were created this year in sustainability focused programs in colleges big and small, the article states. That’s up from three programs added in 2005.

“There's a great perception that there's a sweet spot with energy to do good and do well, and it appears to be the place of job growth," said Rob Melnick, executive dean of ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability, in the article.

ASU’s School of Sustainability, part of the Global Institute of Sustainability, was the first free-standing school of sustainability in the nation, established in 2007. It now has about 600 students who have declared sustainability as a major.
