Stuart interviewed on Arizona Horizon

Gary Stuart, senior policy advisor at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, was interviewed on “Arizona Horizon” on March 7, about the history of “Miranda Rights” and the Miranda Warning.

March 13 marked the 50th anniversary of the case of Ernesto Miranda, who was arrested for rape, kidnapping and robbery in Phoenix without being informed of any of his rights.

Stuart, who has written a book on the case, said the U.S. Supreme Court was actively looking for a case to bring attention to suspect rights.

“It was always the law that suspects had the right to remain silent, the right to a lawyer, the right to not be interrogated,” Stuart said. “The problem was, most people didn’t know that.”

Stuart earned degrees in business and law at the University of Arizona. He joined Jennings, Strouss & Salmon in 1967 and has tried more than 100 jury cases. He serves as an adjunct professor at the College of Law and at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, and also served an eight-year term on the Arizona Board of Regents.
