Sports medicine experts publish article on artistic gymnastics

Doctors Amy Jo Overlin, Biljinder Chima, and Steven Erickson recently published an article titled “Update on Artistic Gymnastics” in Current Sports Medicine Reports from the American College of Sports Medicine.

“I know firsthand from both the athlete and physician perspective that gymnastics is a highly injury prone sport, rivaling that of college football. This article reviews the most recent medical literature on the sport and assists providers in developing appropriate differential diagnoses and treatment plans for their gymnasts,” said Overlin, the lead author of the article.

Overlin and Erickson are board-certified in sports medicine, work at ASU Health Services-Carson Center, and are both adjunct instructors in medicine at the Mayo College of Medicine. Chima is board-certified in sports medicine and finished his fellowship training at ASU Sports Medicine.
