Scholarships deadline approaches


<p>Applications for two new $1,000 scholarships at the Sandra Day O&#39;Connor College of Law, named for two popular staff members in the Student Services Office, are due Feb. 16.</p><separator></separator><p>Marjorie Barrios, Class of 2006, last fall established the Carolyn Landry Scholarship, for which preference will be given to women, particularly single mothers, and the Tammy Vavra Scholarship, to be awarded to a law student with demonstrated financial need. Landry is the College&#39;s Student Services Coordinator Associate, and Vavra is its assistant registrar.</p><separator></separator><p>Landry remembered Barrios as an &quot;extremely kind and big-hearted person&quot; who often came to Student Services for help. Last June, Barrios, who practices law in San Bernadino, Calif., sent Landry a card that said, &quot;Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being patient with me. You&#39;re an amazing woman, and I truly admire you.&quot;<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /> Landry said women law students, especially single mothers, often need extra help to be successful. &quot;I have become friends with many women in law school who are single mothers, and it&#39;s always a struggle,&quot; she said. &quot;Not only do they face financial issues, they have to juggle their schedules and make arrangements for their children.&quot;</p><separator></separator><p>Vavra said, &quot;Marjorie was always a very caring and generous law student, and she is continuing that generosity as an alumni&quot;</p><separator></separator><p>Tom Williams, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, said the scholarships are a testament to Landry&#39;s and Vavra&#39;s willingness to go the extra mile for students.</p><separator></separator><p>&quot;I see the two of them, in particular, and many others on the staff of this law school, in general, as being committed to the success of the student body,&quot; Williams said. &quot;These scholarships are a reflection of that commitment, and show how we can make a difference in the lives of our students.&quot;</p><separator></separator><p>To be eligible for either scholarship, a student must submit an application and additional&nbsp; documents to Joseph Lindsay in room 119 by noon on Monday, Feb. 16.
