Regents' Professor moderates, speaks at judicial workshop

ASU Regents’ Professor Gary Marchant served as a moderator and speaker at the 2013 Ninth Circuit Federal Judicial Center Mid-Summer Workshop July 16, in San Diego.

Marchant moderated the “Searches and Privacy in the Computer Age” segment of the workshop and gave a presentation titled, “Law Enforcement Searches on Social Media Sites.” In it, he explored the potential value of social media to prosecutors.

“Criminals are often sloppy or nondiscriminating in what they say on social media,” Marchant writes in his presentation. “This can demonstrate stages and progression of planning a crime.”

Marchant is the ASU Lincoln Professor of Emerging Technologies, Law and Ethics at the College of Law, and faculty director of the Center for Law, Science & Innovation. He frequently lectures about the intersection of law and science at national and international conferences, and has authored more than 60 articles and book chapters on various issues relating to emerging technologies.
