Professor of practice to study opportunity gap in young children

The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine recently assembled an ad hoc committee that will conduct a consensus study on the causes and consequences of the opportunity gap for young children from birth to age eight.

Joining the committee and representing ASU is Shantel Meek, a professor of practice in the School of Social and Family Dynamics and the founding director of The Children’s Equity Project (CEP)

“The dual pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism have made it abundantly clear that closing opportunity gaps for our youngest learners must be a top national priority,” Meek said. “I'm thrilled to be a part of this National Academies committee, and to roll up our sleeves to find answers and provide recommendations to close opportunity gaps in young children.”
