Original ASU mascot remembers experience as 'a great time'
Dick Jacobs has lived a life collecting stories from his travels around the world. But perhaps his most talked about story is the one where he became ASU's first Sun Devil mascot.
Back then Arizona State University was still Arizona State College and five years after the college's mascot changed from a bulldog to the Sun Devils, someone thought there should actually be a devil.
Jacobs was told to try out for it and soon he was working games in a uniform sewn together by the mother of a cheerleader.
Jacobs says there was nothing like those days as the devil.
"It was one of the greatest experiences of my life," Jacobs said. "It was just a great time being the devil. Oh, absolutely."
