Notable politicians at ASU through the years

Barry Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson joined the Rev. John Atwood onstage at Gammage Auditorium for the funeral of Senator Carl Hayden in 1972. Goldwater's funeral would take place at Gammage more than 20 years later.

In 1974 Edward Kennedy spoke to a packed house in the Arizona Room of the Memorial Union.

Willard Pedrick, then dean of the College of Law, and Senator Eugene McCarthy conversed in the hallway of the College of Law shortly before the senator gave a speech. The year was 1975.

In 1984 Jesse Jackson addressed a large and enthusiastic crowd outside Armstrong Hall following a speech he delivered inside the building.

Bill Clinton spoke from one of the arches on Gammage Auditorium in 1996.

George Bush and ASU president Lattie Coor leave the Carson Student Athlete Center. The year is 1998.

Presidential candidate Howard Dean spoke to a crowd in front of the Student Services Building in 2003.

Then First Lady Laura Bush visited Arizona and one of ASU's campuses in 2003.

Gammage Auditorium was the venue for one of the 2004 Presidential Debates with candidates John Kerry (left) and George Bush.

Then U.S. Senator Barack Obama campaigns on the Tempe campus in 2007.

As President of the United States, Barack Obama returns to ASU to deliver the keynote speech at the Spring 2009 Commencement ceremony in Sun Devil Stadium.
