Maya city that resisted Spanish rule remains elusive today

Sac Balam was a Lacandon Maya city founded over four centuries ago. It was both a sanctuary and place of resistance during the time of Spanish colonial rule. Over time, its location has been lost, but archaeologists are on the hunt for this city and its information about a unique period of Maya history.

Joel Palka, an archaeologist and associate professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, commented on one team’s efforts to find Sac Balam.

“We won’t know where the site is until we dig,” he said.
