Marchant speaks at health care meeting

Professor Gary Marchant, of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, gave a presentation on "Elements of Our Changing Healthcare Delivery System," at the annual meeting of executives of health-insurance providers on March 18-21 in Scottsdale.

Marchant addressed attendees at the Physician Insurers Association of America's 2009 Chief Executive Officer/Chief Operating Officer Meeting, in a joint presentation with Robert Milligan, an attorney at Milligan, Lawless, Taylor, Murphy & Bailey, and a graduate of the College's LL.M. program in Genomics and Biotechnology Law.

They talked about how the health care delivery system may change in the future, and how changes in technology, informatics and the medical workforce may shape the future of the health care delivery environment. New theories of liability and risk, which likely will surface during the evolution of the system, also were discussed.

Marchant is the executive director of the College of Law's Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology. His research interests include the use of genetic information in environmental regulation, risk and the precautionary principle, legal aspects of personalized medicine, and regulation of emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, neuroscience and biotechnology. Marchant teaches courses in Environmental Law, Law, Science & Technology, Genetics and the Law, Biotechnology: Science, Law and Policy, and Nanotechnology Law & Policy. He also is a professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University.
