Marchant honored by Alumni Association
Professor Gary Marchant received the 2009 Faculty Award from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law Alumni Association at its annual luncheon on Feb. 3.
Marchant, Executive Director of the College’s Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology, accepted the award from Stefanie Layton, an association board member whose introduction of him included quotes from a former student, Xochitl Orozco.
“He’s the most approachable person for being so educated and so qualified and so intelligent,” said Orozco, a former Center Scholar, who received help from Marchant on a research paper that was presented at a 2007 conference. “If Gary has a fault, it’s that he is extremely reluctant to say `no’ to any project in law and science or technology that is exciting or any project that will benefit a student.
“He is a tireless worker, a remarkably informed and creative thinker, and an enthusiastic supporter of students.”
Marchant, who holds a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of British Columbia and a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, graduated first in his class from Harvard Law School. He frequently lectures about the intersection of law and science, and has written more than 60 articles and book chapters on issues related to emerging technologies.
Marchant said he was honored to receive the award, noting it has been given in the past to consummate teachers such as Jon Rose and Michael Berch, longtime College of Law professors.
“One of the things that strikes me about ASU is that, in addition to scholarship, there’s a real commitment to teaching,” Marchant said.
