After leaving the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) to join the Pac-10 in 1978, the Sun Devils shocked the #2 USC Trojans 20-7 at Sun Devil Stadium on Oct. 14, 1978, to earn the program's first ever Pac-10 win.

Quarterback Mark Malone (16) and running back Newton Williams (29) scramble from the Southern Cal defenders.

Mark Malone outruns Trojan pursuit for a big gain. Malone led the Sun Devils to the win, rushing for 139 yards and 1 touchdown and throwing for 167 yards and 1 touchdown.

Place kicker Steve Hicks made a pair of field goals for 40 and 38 yards.

The 20-7 defeat was Southern Cal's only loss in 1978 as the Trojans would go on to split the National Championship (USC was No. 1 in the coaches' poll) with Alabama. To see more historic photos of the game, visit https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150299696816854.334190.22208101853.
