Law students featured in `Yuma Sun'

An article in the June 9 edition of The Sun in Yuma reported on a summer internship program in the county's Office of the Legal Defender, which is providing a real-world legal experience to four Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law students.

In the article by James Gilbert, 2L students Eric Robinson, Omer Gurion, Amara Edblad and Sarah Spears were interviewed about the 10-week program which began five years ago. Also participating in the program is Sebastian Sanchez, a student at Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh.

"This is one of the only places for experience outside my classroom," said Gurion. "Nothing can suck the passion out of you like a dry book."

So far, Edblad has done research, observed court hearings and written several memos and motions. "I'm going to be able to apply what I'm learning here to my classes next year because this is exactly what I'm going to be doing in some of them," she said. "It's learning by osmosis, and I want to learn as much as I can while I'm here."

Spears told Gilbert that she plans to encourage her classmates to take part in the program; that word-of-mouth advertising is how Robinson became involved.

"Writing is such an important part of law school and being able to do it while I'm here is going to help me tremendously," he said.
