Law professor comments on U.S. District Judge

Professor Robert Bartels was quoted in the July 21 edition of the Arizona Daily Star, in an article about the reputation of U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton, who is deciding whether to block Arizona’s new immigration law from taking effect.

In “Judge is known as fair, thorough,” reporter Brady McCombs quoted Bartels as saying Bolton is known for her conduct in court and quality of work. In 1982, Bartels took a case in front of Bolton, then a Maricopa County Superior Court judge.

“She’s very smart, very well prepared, very quick to cut to the core of things,” he said. “She’s a terrific administrator. She just really gets things done quickly, but still well.”

Bartels, the Charles M. Brewer Professor of Trial Advocacy, has taught a variety of courses, including Fact Investigation, Evidence, Governmental Protection of Civil Rights, Trial Advocacy, Environmental Law, Civil Procedure and the Civil Justice Clinic. He has litigated more than 300 civil and criminal cases in various state and federal courts, including four oral arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court, and he currently handles criminal cases for the Arizona Justice Project.
