Labor Day Weekend at ASU
Sun Devil Spirit burst into flame during the second week of classes at Arizona State University.
Students head for classes, passing the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building I on the Tempe campus. The building provides flexible laboratories with adjoining workspace for bioengineering, neural engineering and molecular, tissue and cell engineering research to develop artificial organs, biomaterials and diagnostic and therapeutic devices.
Andrew Buck, treasurer for Theta Tau, the professional engineering fraternity, grills up burgers and hotdogs, near the Engineering Research Center. The fraternity uses the event at the beginning of each semester to attract potential members.
Students Alexandria Cable, Katie Grzybowski, Sarah Del Real and Catherine Dee participate in the “Take Back the Night ” event on the West Campus to assist others to break the silence that surrounds sexual violence.
Sarah Reaves spikes the ball over two Charleston Southern University defenders during first round play of the ASU Sheraton Classic, as the Sun Devils team tore through the event over the Labor Day weekend. Reaves is also one of the players named to the All Tournament team.
Saturday brought the football home opener as the Sun Devils hosted the Bengals of Idaho State. Matthew Chismar, 7, gets a high five from wide receiver Gerell Robinson as the team arrived at the stadium.
Before the game, the Devil’s Lair, a free tailgate event, was held in the cool confines of the Wells Fargo Arena.
Macayo’s Mexican Kitchen and Outback Steakhouse were there to provide food and beverages for the tailgate event.
Michale Polakowski, 7, tests his passing accuracy in the Sparky’s Fun Zone. His father, Michael Polakowski is an 1984 alumnus of ASU.
Members of the Sun Devil Marching Band played for the gathered fans.

Danny Sullivan, who got the starting call for the first time in his career, went 13-of-25 for 165 yards with no interceptions.
Running back Dimitri Nance scored ASU’s first rushing touchdown of the game.
Defense was the name of the game, as the Devils held the Bengals to just 37 yards of total offense. Pierre Singfield (31) and Brandon McGee (48) stop Idaho State’s Clint Knickrehm.

Ryan Bass scores on a 38-yard run late in the third quarter. The Devils beat the Bengals 50-3. The next home game is Sept. 19, when ASU hosts University of Louisiana Monroe.
