Kittrie, Gartner to participate in American foreign policy conference

Professor <a href="http://www.law.asu.edu/Apps/Faculty/Faculty.aspx?individual_id=5347">Or… Kittrie</a> and Associate Professor <a href="http://www.law.asu.edu/Apps/Faculty/Faculty.aspx?individual_id=65861">D… Gartner</a> will participate in an interdisciplinary conference, "Breaking Down the Walls: Increasing the Discourse in the American Policy Making Community," March 31 to April 2, at the Wyndham Phoenix in downtown Phoenix.<separator></separator>Kittrie will be on the panel, The Future of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime, and Gartner is chairing the panel, Economic Development Among Women in the Third World, April 1.<separator></separator>The conference is presented by the ASU School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, in partnership with the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations, the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A & M University, and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.<separator></separator>The program seeks to break down barriers and open discourse between people who formulate, implement or influence American foreign policy. By examining topics such as nuclear proliferation, humanitarian interventionism, global environmental politics, counterinsurgency, and anti-Americanism, academics and foreign policy-makers will discuss how history shapes an understanding of the future. His teaching and research focus on international law, especially nonproliferation and sanctions, and criminal law. Kittrie has testified on nonproliferation issues before both the U.S. Senate and House and is one of 12 members of a special Congressionally-created committee to make recommendations on how to better prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The addition of Gartner to the faculty in 2009 is the first major hire of the College of Law's newly created Center for Law and Global Affairs. His hiring has helped bring to ASU one of the most comprehensive and global health-law programs in the United States. Gartner also is an affiliated faculty member in the Global Health Program of the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change.
