Jelmini, Chaney win Pac-10 titles as both ASU teams finish third
Final Results (pdf)
Two more individual titles were won and six Top 10 all-time marks in program history were recorded on Saturday at Drachman Stadium in Tucson as the 2011 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships came to a close with both Arizona State University teams finishing third in the team standings. Senior Jasmine Chaney captured the 400m dash title while rookie Anna Jelmini won the discus to give the Sun Devils five total individual crowns that included Jordan Clarke in the men’s shot put and Christabel Nettey in the women’s long jump one day earlier and Samantha Henderson in the heptathlon last weekend.
Overall, Oregon swept both team titles with Arizona taking second in both as well. Oregon won the women’s crown with 154.5 points with UA (150), ASU (121), USC (103) and Stanford (97) rounding out the Top 5. On the men’s side, UO scored 129 points to win a tightly contested meet that saw UA in second with 111 points and a three-way tie between ASU, USC and UCLA for third place, all with 99 points.
Jelmini captured the first Pac-10 title of her young career as all five of her measured throws would have won the event as she won the discus with a toss of 60.33m (197-11). The redshirt freshman was one of two Sun Devils to score in the event as the 2010 Pac-10 Champion, Cj Navarro, finished seventh overall in 47.86m (157-00). With the win, Jelmini continues a streak of five years in a row in which a Sun Devil woman won the discus, following Sarah Stevens (2007 and 2009), Jessica Pressley (2008) and Navarro (2010). Only UCLA has a longer streak (six) in the women’s discus in Pac-10 history.
Chaney won the first Pac-10 title of her career as she blazed the track in a time of 52.23 to capture the 400m dash and post the fifth-fastest time in school history. Her time, which led a 1-7-8 finish for the Sun Devil women as Keia Pinnick was seventh in 54.03 and Dominique’ Maloy was eighth in 54.67, came just 16 minutes after crossing the finish line in the 100m hurdles, where she took third overall in 13.15, the fourth-best time in school history.
Following her victory in the quarter, the senior came back and finished fourth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 57.62. In that same race, ASU also had two other point earners as Kayla Sanchez was fifth in 57.70, the sixth-best time in school history, and Pinnick was seventh in 58.91. But Chaney wasn’t done there as she opened and closed the day by anchoring relay teams. First up, she joined with Alycia Herring, Sanchez and Maloy to run 44.28 and finish second overall in the 4x100m relay while posting the seventh-fastest time in school history. At the end of the night, Chaney joined with Maloy, Sanchez and Pinnick to run 3:35.35 and finish fourth in the 4x400m relay.
The sprinters were not done there, however, as Sanchez, Pinnick and Maloy each scored in two individual events. Sanchez placed fifth in the 100m dash (11.66) and fifth in the 400m hurdles, where her time of 57.70 stands as the sixth-best in program history. Pinnick earned a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 400m dash (54.03) and the 400m hurdles (58.91) while Maloy was eighth in both the 200m dash (23.91) and the 400m dash (54.67).
The women rounded out their scoring in the field as two individuals added points, including Henderson in the high jump. In the vertical event, she had another strong competition as she finished fourth overall with a clearance of 1.80m (5-10.75), passing her previous best of 1.75m from earlier this year in Tucson on two occasions as she also cleared 1.77m before her top mark. Her 1.80m clearance now ranks her sixth all-time in Sun Devil history and making her just the sixth ASU woman to clear 1.80m or better. The remaining points came from Nettey in the triple jump with her mark of 12.52m (41-01.00) for sixth place in the meet and No. 3 all-time in ASU history.
The men posted three runner-up finishes on the day, including two in the sprints and one in the field. On the track, Ryan Milus was second in the 100m dash at 10.34 after anchoring the 4x100m relay of Daniel Auberry, Allante Battle and Kelsey Caesar to second in a season-best 39.51. The final runner-up showing came in the discus where shot put champion Clarke hit a mark of 56.51m (185-05) to add eight more team points. Clarke also finished seventh in the hammer throw to open the day with his toss of 60.40m (198-02).
Several of those sprinters also scored in other events, including Battle and Caesar, who joined John Kline and William Henry in taking third in the 4x400m relay with a season-best time of 3:06.75. Milus finished fourth in the 200m dash (20.97); Henry was sixth in the 400m dash (46.27) and Caesar seventh (46.35); Battle was fifth in the 100m dash (10.50) while Auberry was seventh (10.57); and senior Ian Caracciolo ran a career-best 52.44 to finish seventh in the 400m hurdles.
The final points on the track came in the mid-distances as both Darius Terry and Mason McHenry posted Top 8 finishes in their respective events. Terry ran 3:44.57 and just missed the all-time Top 10 list (by 0.53) to finish fourth overall in the 1,500m run while McHenry took seventh in the 800m run in 1:49.95.
In the field, the Sun Devils saw two men score in the Top 5 of the pole vault, including senior Corey Phallen, who cleared 5.12m (16-09.50) to take third overall. In the same event, Jeremy Marcinko cleared 4.97m (16-03.50) and finished fifth. Chris Benard was the final point scorer for the Sun Devil men as he took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 15.63m (51-03.50).
The Sun Devils will now await word from the NCAA on which student-athletes have qualified to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary First and Second Round meet that will be held in Eugene, Ore., next week.
