Iraqi artist Bassim Al-Shaker arrives for museum residency
The ASU Art Museum announces the arrival of the newest visiting international artist, Bassim Al-Shaker, from Baghdad, Iraq.
Al-Shaker’s figurative painting depicts rural life and tradition in southern Iraq. His work is currently on view in the Iraqi Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Italy.
“The ASU Art Museum is very pleased and honored to welcome young Iraqi painter Bassim Al-Shaker to Phoenix through our International Artist Residency Program,” said Gordon Knox, ASU Art Museum director.
“Bassim is an extraordinarily talented artist at the beginning of his career. His artwork is currently on view in the Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious international exhibitions in the world. Through the residency program, we are able to offer ASU students and the community the opportunity to interact with and learn from this dynamic young painter.”
Al-Shaker will be in residency for two months, from mid-July through mid-September, with the ASU Art Museum’s International Artist Residency Program at Combine Studios in downtown Phoenix. The residency will include a public lecture, workshops with graduate students from the ASU School of Art and an exhibition of new work.
