Gym Devils take sixth at Pac-12 Championships

The Arizona State women's gymnastics team finished in sixth place at the Pac-12 Championships, its best finish since 2009.

“I was happy that we fought to come back. We stumbled on bars big time, had to count a 9.0," said head coach John Spini. "Then the kids just didn’t give up, they fought back and luckily another team missed and we moved into that second position."

In the first session the Sun Devils scored a total of 194.550 points, good for the second-best score behind Arizona's 195.900 in the first round.

"We’re just trying to train for Regionals. Overall I was so excited about the crowd and the Pac-12 event. It was so nice and I think Utah did a wonderful job,” said Spini.

ASU excelled on floor in the meet scoring a total of 49.000, it's fourth 49.000-plus performance this season in the event. Senior Beaté Jones once again proved why she's ASU's top floor worker, scoring a session-high 9.875 to anchor the Sun Devil's line-up. Freshman Morgan Steigerwalt (9.850), senior Amanda Davies (9.825) and freshman Brianna Gades (9.800) all contributed to the Sun Devil's success in the event.

Overall, Jones took 10th on floor, 12th on vault with a score of 9.850 and finished the all-around in eighth place.

Freshmen Brianna Gades and Morgan Steigerwalt showcased why the Sun Devil's rookies have been an integral part of the team's success, tying for 22nd overall in the event with a score of 9.800.
