Gym Devils look forward to 2013 season after successful intrasquad

December 10, 2012

The Gym Devils look to use the energy they generated during their intrasquad meet as momentum heading into the season.

On Dec. 7, the entire team filled the John Spini Gymnastics Practice Facility with cheers as their teammates nailed high-difficulty skills. Twelve out of the 14 Sun Devils competed with junior veteran Samantha Seaman competing all-around.

Four freshmen made appearances with big smiles and lots of spirit, previewing the bright future that lays ahead for the program.

Freshman Stephanie Miceli stood out, anchoring both beam and bars for the team. This is an unusual spot for a freshman and head coach John Spin said the position is "huge".

"Some of these girls that are on the wall [Spini points to the wall lined with pictures of former All-Americans] had anchor spots as freshmen and it teaches them a lot real fast," said Spini.

With just a little over a month away from the start of competition, this intrasquad showed glimpses of the exhilarating season to come.

"Overall I am very proud of them and pleased with what I am seeing," Spini said.

The Gym Devils open their season at home against No. 4 Oklahoma at 2 p.m., Jan. 12, in Wells Fargo Arena.
