Gov. Brewer appoints Hessick to legislative committee
<p>Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has appointed <a href="http://www.law.asu.edu/Apps/Faculty/Faculty.aspx?individual_id=51242&qu…; target="_blank">Carissa Byrne Hessick</a>, a professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, to the Arizona's Federal Sex Offender Registration Notification Act Study Committee.</p><separator></separator><p>Hessick will serve as the researcher for the Committee, a position that was created for an academic from one of the state's universities with expertise in the area of sex offender research. The Committee will examine how effectively Arizona's current sex offender laws prevent repeat offenses, and what impact there would be if the state adopted the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, named for a six-year-old boy who was kidnapped and murdered in Florida in 1981.</p><separator></separator><p>"One of the satisfactions of holding office is the opportunity to recognize outstanding citizens by naming them to positions of leadership within our state government," Brewer wrote in her letter appointing Hessick.</p><separator></separator><p>Hessick teaches Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, and a seminar on sentencing law and policy. Her research focuses on aggravation and mitigation in criminal sentencing, relative crime severity, and other political and doctrinal issues associated with sentencing.
