Furnish to present free trade paper in Mexico

Professor Dale Beck Furnish, of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, will give a paper in Mexico City May 14, as part of a three-day international conference at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The conference is called "North America in the 21st Century," and will include jurists from Mexico, the United States and Canada. It will celebrate 200 years of Mexico's independence, but also project what may happen in Mexico, the United States and Canada in this century and whether the three countries may join in further harmonizing their laws and perhaps even in more formal union.

Furnish will give a paper on the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on that process. His paper is titled, "La Soberanía Nacional y los Tratados de Libre Comercio: el Desarrollo de Un Derecho Comunitario Dentro del NAFTA" (National Sovereignty and Free Trade Agreements: The Development of a Community Law within NAFTA).

Furnish enjoys an international reputation for his work in comparative law and international commercial and trade law, as well as U.S. commercial law. Bilingual in Spanish, he has been invited to teach and speak in every country in South and Central America, and has served as visiting professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of Sonora, Mexico and on two occasions at the Catholic University of Peru. Furnish was elected a Supernumerary Member of the Mexican Academy of Private International and Comparative Law in 2003, one of only two U.S. jurists so honored to date.
