Four Sun Devils named to Academic All-America list
ASU All-Time Academic All-Americans
Four members of the Arizona State University track and field team were honored, June 21, as they were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Seniors John Kline and Jamie Sandys, as well as graduate Cj Navarro and junior Nick Happe all earned either first, second or third team honors on the prestigious list, the organization announced Thursday morning.
Kline highlighted the field for the Sun Devils, earning first team Academic All-American honors. Kline graduated in May with a 4.03 GPA in Kinesiology. Kline was honored with the ASU Alumni Outstanding Graduate Award and Mouer Award from the School of Nutrition. He also earned an athletic All-America award, taking second-team honors for his work on the men's 4x400-meter relay that finished 10th overall at the NCAA Championships earlier this month.
It was the first time Kline has been selected to the Capital One/CoSida All America® team and added to his many academic achievements this year, which also included Pac-12 first team honors, MPSF All-Academic honors and likely a spot on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list as well.
Sandys earned second team honors on the Academic All-America team for the second consecutive season. Sandys - a point-scorer at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships in the decathlon - finished with a 4.09 GPA and double major in Anthropology and Sociology. Sandys also finished his career as a three-time first-team Pac-12 All-Academic selection.
Navaro made the Capital One/CoSida All America team for the first time in her career, earning second team honors on the women's side. Navaro finished her graduate degree this season after posting a 4.08 GPA – graduate-work included – in Education Technology. Navarro scored for the Sun Devils in both the hammer and discus competition at the Pac-12 Championships and was just one spot away from qualifying for the NCAA finals in the discus competition.
Navarro was a four-time All-Academic Pac-12 honor with the selection, having been a first-team selection in 2010, 2011 and 2012 while being a second team honoree during her redshirt freshman campaign.
Happe rounded out the field for the Sun Devils with a third team selection to the All-Academic team. Happe earned second-team All-America honors indoors in the mile and posted a 4.09 GPA in Finance as well.
