Former water polo star Mariam Salloum signs with pro Italian team


Former Arizona State University water polo standout Mariam Salloum has signed with the professional water polo club Volturno S.C., it has been announced.


Salloum, a native a Berlin, Germany, will join the Italian Club in January and the season will run from Jan. 7 to July 4.  Volturno is a seven-time Italian national championship club and is coached by Salvatore Napolitano.  The team competes in the division just below Italy’s top flight of teams.


Salloum was a AWCPA All-America honorable mention selection last season was second on the team with 51 goals during the 2012 season – the most successful in ASU history - and her 138 goals in her career rank her third all-time in that category at ASU.  Salloum also finished her career ranked third in assists with 108 and third in points with 246.  She also finished her career ranked in the top 10 in steals.


Salloum was one of the most accomplished student-athletes in school history, earning AWCPA All-Academic honors in all four season she competed at ASU.  Salloum became just the third Sun Devil to be honored during all four years of her eligibility, following the likes of Nikki Unbehaun and Bonnie Miles.  Salloum earned an Outstanding selection in three of her four years at ASU – the highest honor given by the AWCPA. 


Salloum finished her athletic career with a 3.85 GPA in political science.
