Fire Safety Month: Learn about fire safety, CPR, AED

If you’ve put off fire safety training or would like to learn how to do hands-only CPR, take advantage of free safety courses offered throughout September during Fire Safety Month.

“It’s never too late to learn how to operate an AED or how to plan for an emergency,” said ASU Fire Marshal Jim Gibbs. “We’re offering most classes on all four campuses so students, faculty and staff can take advantage of these opportunities to learn about safety.”

Classes that will be offered include:

• Fire Prevention and Safety: The general class required for faculty, staff and students that goes over ASU evacuation procedures and protocols, use of fire extinguishers, fire prevention and common causes of fire. Sessions will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 1, at the Memorial Union room 207; 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB LaSala Ballroom C; 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 20, at Polytechnic campus, Union Ballrooms A-C;  11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 26, at the Memorial Union, room 236; and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 29, at the Memorial Union room 236.

• Emergency Preparedness Training: Awareness training on fire code and other applicable code requirements for emergency planning and how to evaluate businesses to help improve business continuity, preparedness and recovery from anticipated emergency scenarios. Sessions will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 1, at the Memorial Union room 207; 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 13, at the Memorial Union 207; and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Sept. 29, at the Memorial Union room 236.

• Hands only Adult CPR Training: An adult CPR training program designed and coordinated through Arizona Department of Health Services, University of Arizona and the American Heart Association using hands only compressions. Sessions will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Sept. 8, at the A.E. England Auditorium at the Downtown Phoenix campus; 10:30 a.m. to noon, Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB room 265; and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 29, at the Tempe campus, Memorial Union room 236.

• CPR/AED Awareness Training: This training on CPR/AED will help increase community awareness of the university’s AED program, protocols and procedures. Sessions will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 7, at the Memorial Union, room 228; from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Sept. 13, at the Memorial Union, room 207; and 10:30 a.m. to noon, Sept. 20, at the Polytechnic campus, Union Ballrooms A-C.

• Tents & Canopies Presentation: A representative from Industrial Fabrics Association International will teach session on tents, canopies and other temporary structures. Accessories, site selection, codes, regulations, inspections, anchorage, management and emergency response will be included. Participants will learn proper staking techniques and alternative staking methods. Sessions will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 9, in room 207 at the Memorial Union; 10:30 a.m. to noon, Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB LaSala Ballroom C; and 10:30 a.m. to noon, Sept. 15, at the Polytechnic campus, Union Ballroom C. 

• Means of Egress: Learn about entrance and exit systems in permanent and temporary structures. Event coordinators can learn about entrance and exit requirements for evacuations as well as safe use, occupant calculations, determining exit widths and the number of exits. Means of Egress sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Sept. 1, in the Memorial Union, room 207; 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 8, at the A.E. England auditorium at the Downtown Phoenix campus; 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB room 265; 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Sept. 20, at the Polytechnic campus Union Ballrooms A-C; and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 26, at the Memorial Union, room 236.

• Large Scale Events Emergency Planning: A general presentation related to emergency preparedness planning for large scale events that have temporary setups inside permanent and temporary structures or are outside in the open.  This will be an interactive discussion with attendees following a short presentation. Sessions will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 7, at the Memorial Union, room 228; 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB LaSala Ballroom C; and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Sept. 26, at the Memorial Union, room 236.

• Special Event Setup Concerns: A short presentation and discussion about recent incidents within the country and internationally involving tents, canopies, stages, platforms and how to work together to ensure a safe event. Sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Sept. 9, at the Memorial Union, room 207; 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 12, at the West campus, UCB LaSala Ballroom C; and 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Sept. 15, at the Polytechnic campus, Union Ballroom C.

• ASU/State Fire Marshal Permitting Process: An overview of the ASU Fire Marshal’s role and responsibilities to include state fire marshal representation or permitting of construction, renovation, special events, fuel tanks, fire and life safety systems. Sessions will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 13, and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 23, at the Memorial Union room 207.

• Meet the Vendors for Special Events Day: This is meet and greet event to network with vendors and event planners. Vendors are from companies that rent tents, canopies, stages, platforms, generators, interactive games, inflatable type equipment, rides, etc. This session will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 29, at the Tempe campus, Memorial Union, Ventana Ballrooms 241A-C.
