Farmers market opens Oct. 8 at ASU Tempe campus

Students, faculty and staff looking to stay healthy and find holiday recipe inspiration are in luck: The Farmers Market @ ASU Tempe is returning Tuesday, Oct. 8 with a new event series and local suppliers.

This semester, community farming and sustainability leaders will share their expertise during the Sustainability Speakers Corner at each farmers market. The interactive presentations will begin at noon and again at 12:30 p.m. at a new location on the Student Services lawn. The first market day will showcase the ASU Arboretum and the Campus Harvest program. Other speakers and topics include:

• Sena Kassim, aka “The Worm Whisperer,” and composting, Oct. 22

• Jay Headly and urban chicken raising, Tuesday, Nov. 5

• Artist Lindsay Kinkade and radical bicycle futures, Nov. 19

“The new event series is another great way to promote health and wellness on campus, as well as to build relationships and community ties,” says Betty Lombardo, University Sustainability Practices program manager. “By interacting with attendees, the food and gardening experts will help people connect with their food so that they can develop sustainable living practices.”

The farmers market will take place every other Tuesday until Nov. 19. In the meantime, be sure to take the farmers market Challenge #1 and eat two cups of fruit each day. Individuals who consume two cups of fruit 10 out of 14 days from Oct. 8 to Oct. 21 will receive a ChicoBag reusable grocery bag and can enter to win a $20 gift card to the farmers market.
