Grant Rocha, a political science freshman from Chandler, Ariz., checks out a campus map to locate his first class of the day.

At the Tempe Transit Center, students arrived by light rail, Valley Metro buses and Tempe Orbit buses. This is the first fall semester that light rail is in operation.

Students cross the University Bridge on their way to class.

Information booths were located around all of the campuses to assist students in finding their classes.

The addition of shade structures between the Memorial Union and Hayden Library makes it one of the most popular places on the Tempe campus to hang out between classes.

Casey Griffin (left), an urban planning major from Payson, Ariz., and Lauren LaFeber, an economics major from Northridge, Calif., find the Scoular Lounge in the Memorial Union a cool place to catch up between classes.

Like the football team, the Sun Devil Marching Band takes to the field to practice. Tucked away near the Karsten Golf Course, the band practices the music performance first.

... Then the marching band puts down their instruments to learn the marching routines.

Will Sowards, a freshman journalism major from Mesa, Ariz., works on his laptop at the Taylor Place Residence Hall on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus.

Heidi Leischner, Ashley Lindemann and Michael Moler (left to right), all seniors at ASU's College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation, chat in the lobby of the nursing school's new building.

Students make their way south through the Physical Sciences complex on their way to and from classes.

Jonathan Piceno (left) and Tessy Ruvalcaba check a class schedule on Piceno's laptop outside the agribusiness center on ASU's Polytechnic campus. Both students are from San Luis, Ariz., and are majoring in agribusiness.

Students pass by Peralta Hall as they change classes at the Polytechnic campus. Paralta Hall is one of Polytechnic’s three new “green” academic complexes, designed to create indoor and outdoor spaces that embrace and sustain our desert culture.

Lorenzo Salgado, a member of the Planning and Activities Board at ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus, chats with students during the Downtown Devils Expo. The expo, held on Taylor Mall, informs students of the many activities and groups available to them at ASU.

An information session for participants in ASU’s Obama Scholar program was held at Gammage Auditorium. Left to right: Lucas Huerta, creative writing major; Anthony Manzo, justice studies major; Emily Espinoza, dance major.

Chris Martin, life sciences major, took time out during the first week of classes to donate blood.

Shada Tsosie, a special education major from Shonto, Ariz., chats with David Vallejos during the West campus Information Expo. Vallejos is the membership chair for the Council for Exceptional Children, a volunteer group for special needs children.
