Exhibit at West campus honors Arizona's fallen soldiers

Fletcher Library at Arizona State University’s West campus will host Remembering Our Fallen, a photo exhibit honoring Arizonans who have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001.

The exhibit will be on display Nov. 24 through Dec. 2, with a Nov. 24 opening event involving participants from Luke Air Force Base and several Arizona veterans organizations.

“We are committed to honoring our service members who have served their country and paid the ultimate price, and to helping their legacy live on,” said Shaun Valentine, president of the Student Veterans Organization on ASU’s West campus, whose members arranged for Remembering Our Fallen to be displayed on campus. “The exhibit includes not just photos of Arizona’s fallen service members, but also letters from their loved ones. It makes a strong emotional impact.”

The Nov. 24 exhibit opening starts with a reception at 1:30 p.m., followed by the event at 2 p.m. The Patriot Guard Riders organization will participate, along with chaplain and honor guard from Luke Air Force Base.

The Student Veterans Organization on ASU’s West campus has approximately 70 members. The group engages in a range of service projects, including visiting the Arizona State Veteran Home in Phoenix to play games with the residents and participating in blood drives with the American Red Cross and the Toys for Tots program. The group recently hosted a barbecue for all Valley veterans.

Remembering Our Fallen will be available for viewing during Fletcher Library’s regular hours: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Exceptions are Nov. 27, when the building closes at 5 p.m., and Nov. 28-29, when the campus is closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The exhibit and opening event are free and open to the public. ASU’s West campus is at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix. For more information, contact the Student Veterans Organization at svo@asu.edu.

The photography exhibit, which is a traveling display sponsored by Bellevue University in Nebraska, serves as the culmination to ASU’s “Salute to Service 2013,” Nov. 9-16, with events honoring veterans on all four Valley campuses of ASU.
