Desert Overture presents musical journey at West campus

Community concert band Desert Overture brings a program called “Flashback” to ASU’s West campus for a free concert on Friday, March 22. The 7:30 p.m. performance will be held in the La Sala Ballroom at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road.

From the Roaring 20s to Woodstock, World War II to the New Millennium, “Flashback” takes audience members on a musical journey back through the ages. Among the highlights of the program are “Over the Rainbow,” selections from “South Pacific,” and the Cantina Band from “Star Wars.”

“We are putting a new twist on the concept of a ‘timeline revue’ concert,” said Scott Helms, Desert Overture’s artistic director. “Rather than simply performing a revue of music that was popular in each decade, we are including music that highlights landmark historical events throughout the 20th century. Some are joyous, like the first successful flight, and others are tragic, like World War II and the assassination of JFK. The result is a concert packed with emotion.”

Desert Overture is a 60-piece ensemble that holds firmly to its mission to enrich people’s lives through the universal language of music. Members of the band are proud to be cultural ambassadors of the LGBT community in the Valley. Their mission is to build bridges of acceptance and understanding in the community, provide a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for ensemble and audience members, and foster a greater appreciation of quality music.

Attendees are invited to join Desert Overture members in the lobby for light refreshments after the concert.
