DeRemer, Williams to present at conference

March 30, 2009

Assistant Dean Ilona DeRemer and Samantha Williams, assistant director in the Career Services Office, of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, will give the presentation, "Reaching Out to Small Firms Through Effective Programming," at the 2009 Annual Education Conference of the National Association of Legal Placement. The conference is April 1-4 in Washington, D.C.

The session will focus on the design, implementation and marketing of small firm programming, and teaching participants to create programs tailored to their school's student and lawyer demographics based on models created by urban and rural institutions.

Williams published an article, "Preparing for the Judicial Clerkship Application Season," in the February issue of the NALP Bulletin. In it, she reported on strategies used during the College's Small Firm Week to bridge the gap between tomorrow's small-firm associates and firms that are seeking them.

"Small firm outreach is most effective when approached as a two-way street between law student and lawyer," Williams advised. "Design and promote your events in such a way that both parties interact in a casual environment and come away feeling more knowledgeable about the other and better prepared to engage in the small firm employment process."
