Like those of the first ladies before her, Michelle Obama’s hair will help shape public perceptions about who she is. “Within our contemporary culture women – much more than men – are judged based on their appearance,” says Rose Weitz, professor of women and gender studies. “Part of being a first lady is projecting an image that will best help their husbands succeed,” Weitz says.
