Cross country wraps up 2011 season at National Championships


The Arizona State University women’s cross country team posted a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Freshman Shelby Houlihan paced the team as she has for the entire season, finishing 93rd overall in 20:57.8.  Houlihan was eighth among the freshmen in the field and was among the country's top newcomers throughout the season. 

Senior Lindsay Prescott wrapped up her collegiate cross country career with a 191st place finish in 21:47.6.  Freshman Macy Bricks was not far behind, finishing 204th in 21:54.8.

Kate Lydy was 210th in 21:57.7 and Natasa Vulic rounded out the scoring individuals in 224th place in a time of 22:10.3. 

The Sun Devils were competing at their 13th national championship in the last 14 years.  

Georgetown University was the women’s team champion, edging out the top Pac-12 team in Washington by a mere eight points.   Villanova’s Sheila Reid was the individual champion, out-leaning Oregon’s Jordan Hasay for her second consecutive title.  

Monday competition wrapped up the 2011 cross country season.  The team will now turn its attention to the 2012 track and field season, which is set to get underway in January.
