Collegiate 9-ball, table tennis championships to be held at ASU

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) will host the second combined Collegiate 9-Ball and Table Tennis Championships at Arizona State University this weekend. The Arizona State University Memorial Union serves as the site of the awards banquet, player dining and multi-day 9-ball tournament, while the table tennis competition will be in the Gold Gym at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex.

These programs have a 75-year history with ACUI. This year, more than 100 students represent 54 colleges, universities and two-year institutions from 26 states. Participants qualified at either the regional competition or at one of four independent qualifying events and made their way to Arizona State University for the championships.

“These tournaments help connect students attending institutions all over the country to share their passion for the sport, enhance their experience as students and compete on a national level,” said ACUI recreation and leisure activities program team leader James Contratto. “ACUI helps build community by bringing these enthusiasts together to help them make global connections that will last a lifetime.”

Table tennis and 9-ball involve more than learning good fundamentals – mental stamina and personal discipline are also critical. Each is key to a student’s success on the tables as well as in the classroom.
