College of Law alumnus chosen for Nashvillian of the year
<p>A. Gregg Ramos (Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law Class of 1980) has been chosen as the 2008 Nashvillian of the Year by the <i>Nashville</i> (TN) <i>Scene</i> newspaper. </p><separator></separator><p>In a Jan. 8 article, reporters Melissa Wozniak and Jim Ridley describe how Ramos worked to fight an "English Only" charter amendment that would have made English the city's official language for municipal services. (The amendment failed in the Jan. 22 vote.)</p><separator></separator><p>But the reporters say Ramos was not chosen for the award merely for his battle against "English Only," nor for representing the Latino community in Nashville.</p><separator></separator><p>"Indeed, what makes Ramos our Nashvillian of the Year - and ironically something of a representative, however reluctantly - is what he brings to the city as an individual."</p><separator></separator><p>Ramos, the son of a Mexican immigrant, was born in Phoenix, and earned a degree in political science at Arizona State University before going to law school, then serving as an assistant city prosecutor for four years.
