Camp Broadway announces Tempe auditions

June 13, 2007

Camp Broadway, the award-winning theater company that creates special Broadway-themed events, experiences and educational programs for children, teens and families, will perform in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the fifth consecutive year.

Once again, hundreds of talented young performers from across the country will have the opportunity to perform a special number written especially for them on the national telecast.

This year, the parade's performance number is “Making Magic,” written by renowned composer Michael Feinstein, with lyrics by Bill Schermerhorn, Macy's creative director.

Camp Broadway auditions will be held in Tempe from 9 a.m. to noon, June 16, at ASU's Fine Arts Center, room 122.

Camp Broadway is seeking 600 energetic, bright performers, ages 10-16, to participate in a special one-week program leading up to the performance in the 81st Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, live from Herald Square. This specially crafted program, featuring a series of Broadway workshops, classes and rehearsals, includes:

• A professionally choreographed musical routine.

• All rehearsals and run-throughs.

• Herald Square camera blocking rehearsal.

• Nationally televised parade performance.

• Costume fitting and make-up tips.

• Parade costume.

• Cast party (pizza party).

• Broadway dance workshop.

• Commemorative T-shirt.

• Commemorative Macy's parade pin.

Those auditioning should bring a completed application, wear dance shoes and comfortable clothes and be ready to dance (they will learn a combination by a Broadway choreographer). To download the application, visit the Web site www.campbroadway.com.

Those who are unable to attend the auditions can submit a videotape with a completed application form for consideration by Camp Broadway 's artistic director. All videotape submissions should include a short dance routine and a one-minute song. Videotapes must arrive at the Camp Broadway office by Sept. 1. If accepted, the program fee is $695 per participant, not including travel or housing.

Camp Broadway has been featured on the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade telecast since 1993.
